Early Detection Of Lung Cancer

Early Detection of Lung Cancer

New Guidelines Could Narrow Racial Disparities

"Early detection of lung cancer through low-dose computed tomography screening is one of the most promising strategies to reduce lung cancer mortality."

In 2021, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force updated its guidelines for lung cancer screening, lowering the starting age for screening to 50 years and the exposure levels to 20 pack years.

These changes could have a significant impact on reducing lung cancer disparities, as African Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with lung cancer at a younger age and with more advanced disease.

"These new guidelines are a major step forward in the fight against lung cancer," said Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. "They will help to ensure that more people are screened for lung cancer, and that more people are diagnosed with early-stage disease, when it is more treatable."

The American Cancer Society recommends that people who are at high risk for lung cancer talk to their doctor about getting screened.
