‘There could be surprises’ – Sacchi outlines what he ‘expects’ from Fonseca’s Milan

Rossoneri legend expects a 'great response' from the Italian club after they tumbled out of the Champions League at the group stage

Arrigo Sacchi expects a great response from AC Milan after they failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Milan needed to beat Liverpool by two goals to reach the last 16 but they lost 2-1 at San Siro on Tuesday, with Fikayo Tomori’s early goal cancelled out by Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi.

The defeat means Milan have been eliminated at the group stage for the second season running and it is the fourth time in a row that they have failed to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

Sacchi: 'Milan still have a lot of quality'

Despite their disappointing exit from the Champions League, Sacchi believes Milan still have a lot of quality and he is confident they can challenge for the Serie A title this season.

"There could be surprises in the second half of the season," Sacchi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Milan have a lot of quality and they can still win the Scudetto."

"I expect a great response from the team after the disappointment of the Champions League exit. They will be determined to prove that they are still one of the best teams in Italy."

Fonseca: 'We need to learn from our mistakes'

Milan coach Paulo Fonseca admitted that his team made too many mistakes against Liverpool.

"We made too many mistakes and we were punished by a great team," Fonseca said.

"We need to learn from our mistakes and we need to be more clinical in front of goal. We had some good chances to score but we didn't take them."

"We are disappointed to be out of the Champions League but we need to focus on the Serie A and the Coppa Italia now. We still have a lot to play for this season."
